Top 10 Distilleries,   Verklaring Ardbeg / Explanation Ardbeg
Nico Meijboom

Ardbeg

Ardbeg is zonder twijfel mijn favoriete distilleerderij.

Ardbeg (english)

Ardbeg is without any doubt my favourite distillery. I still remember the first taste sensation back in 1998 of the “Guaranteed 15 Years Old”, which was in a tax-free purchase “Quintessential Islay Pack” (now a collector’s item) purchased at Manchester airport.

The power of Ardbeg is always overwhelming, but it offers a lot more than just heavy peat, iodine and tar. Ardbeg can be light and fruity, very grainy, bitter chocolate, honey sweet, etc. There are so many different expressions of this magnificent malt whisky, from both the owners and independent bottlers, that there seems forever a new untasted Ardbeg to explore. Just have look in the list with tasting notes to see the amazing number of 90+ scores to understand why this distillery is in leading position.

Ardbeg is also a great distillery to visit. After the tour one can enjoy a great dram and the very friendly staff always had something special to offer on my 3 visits so far. If you’re very lucky you can taste a cask sample (see the picture in my biography). The atmosphere in the Old Kiln Shop annex Lunchroom is very relaxed. You can spend hours there and it is quite likely that you will leave the shop with some precious nectar.

The only downside is that all these 90+ scores are expensive and rare expressions (with the 2006 release of a 40 year old as an absolute lowlight in pricing strategy). However, the standard 10 year old bottling and the slightly more expensive Uigeadail offer great value for money. The subtle classic 17Y is now unfortunately hard to find, but the limited edition Airigh nam beist from 2006 can still be spotted occasionally at specialist retailers.

It was interesting to follow the recent developments in flavour of the distillery under 10 years of Glenmorangie management. The limited editions “Very Young”, “Still Young”, “Almost There” and “Renaissance” seem to indicate the distillery had a sweeter and more accessible taste compared to the current 10 year old as target. However, the 2007 release of “Mor” tasted totally different from these 3 and was more like a further matured version of the “Very Young For Discussion” bottling for the Ardbeg Committee that started this circus. In 2010 the new 10 year old tastes only slightly sweeter and not spectacularly different compared to previous expressions, but of course this can still change in the years to come.
