Springbank
Springbank is mijn vierde favoriete distilleerderij; mede vanwege de diversiteit en traditionele werkwijze. Er worden namelijk drie totaal verschillende smaakprofielen single malts geproduceerd onder de namen Springbank, Longrow en Hazelburn; ieder in diverse expressies. Ook bijzonder is dat de productie volledig traditioneel is gebleven met moutvloeren, het met de hand keren van de kiemende gerst, de meest charmante stookoven en een van de kleinste (open!) mash tonnen die je ooit hebt gezien, kleine stills, een vaten opslag met aarden vloer en een eigen bottelinglijn. Door de Springbank distilleerderij wandelen is als een tijdreis naar de 19e eeuw en het eindresultaat van al dit werk kan geweldig zijn. Net als met Ardbeg komt er geen einde aan de variatie in zowel bottelingen van de distilleerderij als onafhankelijke bottelingen.
Zie ook hier de enorme lijst 90+ scores voor oude Springbank bottelingen in het klassement. Net als bij Ardbeg is het minpunt dat al die 90+ scores inmiddels zeer dure flessen zijn. Vanwege de kleinschalige productie is wat variatie tussen de flessen normaal. De 10 jaar oude Springbank botteling was wat teleurstellend toen hij net uit kwam maar is anno 2010 duidelijk verbetert. Voor wat meer euro’s vind ik de 15 jaar echter veel lekkerder. De speciale combinatie van medium turf en een zilte smaak met bourbon- of sherry zoetheid is voor mij het meest aantrekkelijke aspect van Springbank.
De Longrow expressies zijn zeer turfrijk en medicinaal en kunnen worden vergeleken met de zeer turfrijke Islay whisky’s. Van Longrow is de 14 jaar oude editie zeer de moeite waard. Hazelburn daarentegen is vrijwel zonder turf bereid en drie maal gedistilleerd in de stijl van Lowland en Ierse whisky. Van Hazelburn is de 12 jaar oude editie zeer de moeite waard. Maak echter niet de vergissing Longrow en Hazelburn als imitaties van Islay en Lowland te beschouwen. Zij hebben wel degelijk een eigen karakter.

Springbank is my fourth favourite distillery; mainly because of the diversity and tradition. It produces three very different single malt whiskies under the names of Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn; each of them in various expressions. It is also very special that the production is kept completely in the old tradition of whisky making: malting floors, hand turning of the barley, the most charming peat burner and one of the smallest (and open) mash tuns you will ever see, small size stills, a clay floored bonded warehouse and an own bottling line. Walking through the Springbank distillery is like a time-travel back to the 19th century and the end result of the matured bottlings can be fabulous. Just as with Ardbeg there is also no end in the variety of owners and independent bottlings.
Just have look in the lists with tasting notes to see the amazing number of 90+ scores. Just as with Ardbeg the downside is that all these 90+ scores are from expensive and quite rare bottles. Because of the small scale of production variation between bottles is normal. The 10 year old Springbank bottling was disappointing when it first came on the market, but has improved significantly over the years. Against some extra expense the 15 years old is my preferred dram. The very special combination of a medium peated and briny taste with either bourbon or sherry sweetness is for me the most attractive aspect of Springbank.
The Longrow expressions are heavily peated and medicinal and can be compared to the heavily peated Islay whiskies. From Longrow the 14 year old is worth checking out. Hazelburn is virtually unpeated and triple distilled in the style of Lowland and Irish whiskies. From Hazelburn the 12 years old edition is worth buying. Do not make the mistake to view Longrow and Hazelburn as imitations of Islay and Lowland whisky, as they both have their own character.
